Requirements for Marketing on WhatsApp

WhatsApp has changed the rules for marketing conversations inside their app. There are now very strikt rules to follow, otherwise you will get banned.

Since November 2024, the following rules have been officially in effect:

  • Only opt-in-authorized, verified business accounts are allowed to send marketing or promotional messages via the WhatsApp Business Platform.

  • Unverified accounts and personal numbers are no longer permitted to send any marketing content.

  • The policy applies globally and immediately from the date of publication — there was no grace period or transition phase.

Allowed Channels

Marketing is only permitted via:

  • WhatsApp Business App (for very small businesses, limited features)

  • WhatsApp Business Platform (API)only via verified Business Solution Providers (BSPs) or direct Meta integration


Verified Accounts

To use the WhatsApp Business Platform for marketing purposes, you must have:

  • A verified Facebook Business Manager account

  • A WhatsApp Business Account (WABA)

  • Optional: Green checkmark (“Official Business Account”)

Only verified businesses are allowed to send marketing templates (Utility/Promotional Messages).


Template Approval & Content Review

  • Every marketing message must be submitted as a message template and approved by WhatsApp before sending.

  • WhatsApp will check:

    • Content (no spam, scams, or misleading offers)

    • Language and format

    • Purpose (e.g., product launch, event promotion)

What Is Prohibited?

  • Bulk messaging using private or unofficial WhatsApp numbers

  • Uncertified tools (e.g., web scrapers, bulk messaging tools)

  • Cold outreach (contacting users without prior opt-in)

  • Use of WhatsApp for high-risk industries like loans, weapons, gambling, or drugs

Violations may lead to permanent account bans by WhatsApp.
